Its retro visuals recall games from the early PlayStation era, while its fast movement draws on modern shooters such as Titanfall and Doom Eternal. Its combat also borrows ideas from stylish action games like Devil May Cry.

    Verdun is an online first-person shooter built around squads and set in the First World War and inspired by the 1916 battle of the same name. Teams fight over trench lines in attack and defence rounds, using period weapons, uniforms and maps modelled on real Western Front battlefields. Built in Unity by independent studios M2H and the Netherlands-based BlackMill Games, it left Steam Early Access in April 2015 and later reached consoles.

It is mostly a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up, though some levels switch to side-scrolling. Players pilot one of two space-capable fighter craft, earning new weapons and abilities by defeating bosses, including the power to transform into a mech.

The Steam listing is an open beta, and the developers say on the page that the pandemic made it hard to fund the project in Tunisia. It was made by Nuked Cockroach, an independent Tunisian studio that later shifted from PC to hyper-casual mobile games.

As Agent V, players infiltrate the facility of UB Industries, climbing, crawling, taking cover and picking up weapons to destroy its robot army, and it uses an arm-swinging way to move. It launched in early access in 2017. It was developed by Game Cooks, a studio founded in Beirut by Lebanese brothers Arz and Lebnan Nader.
