Background and Challenges

Sackbird Studios, an independent studio formed by former ZeniMax Online Studios developers, has launched 'Hijinks High', an online co-op game where players cause chaos in a high school setting. The studio was formed after Microsoft canceled Project Blackbird, leading to the layoff of key developers. This cancellation, which occurred in 2025, prompted the formation of an independent studio aiming to create game experiences free from corporate constraints.

Game Content and Challenges

Hijinks High features randomized missions such as leaving smelly waste in restrooms and setting traps. Players also face 'dares' that can result in injuries requiring hospital visits. The game requires managing bodily needs, including bathroom breaks, concussion management, and dealing with stomachaches. Players can stack illnesses to make large parts of the school uninhabitable or manage resources wisely to avoid discomfort.

Funding and Employment

Sackbird Studios confirmed it has been self-funded for multiple years without external investors. David Worley, the studio's chief creative officer, stated, 'After years in AAA, we wanted the freedom to take smart risks without waiting for a greenlight or chasing quarterly targets.' The studio aims to create bold, character-driven experiences free from corporate compromises.
