Hollow Knight: Silk Song Deep Docks Re Composed

Hallow Knight: Silk Song – Deep Docks

One of the most groundbreaking games in the indie gaming world was Hollow Knight, developed by a very small team called Team Cherry.

The game proved that an idea, art, and music can build a massive world without a huge budget.

The music is by Christopher Larkin, the Australian composer who, with a blend of simplicity and emotion, created a unique sonic identity for the world.

He worked on the project for several years, concurrently with the game's development, and the Silk Song album includes more than 53 musical pieces spanning nearly two hours of music.

My Musical Vision for the Deep Docks Scene

In this remaster, I tried to preserve the musical DNA of Larkin's style, which relies on the ostinato rhythm to build a mysterious atmosphere.

The first version opens with broken chords using the harpsichord and frequent use of the ninth note to add a sense of mystery. The main melody is played on the bassoon, then the intensity gradually builds as the strings enter, playing in different registers.

The middle section (Bridge) uses the same rhythm but with hand chimes and hand bells, then the roles shift to the harp and harpsichord, before the woodwinds and percussion enter in the final scene.

I tried to create a soundscape that conveys mystery and tranquility, then builds to tension—much like Larkin, but with my own voice.
