VA-11 Hall-A is a cyberpunk visual novel in which the player works behind the counter of a small bar in a bleak city. Instead of choosing dialogue, you mix and serve cocktails, and those orders shape where the nonlinear story goes as regulars share their lives. It was made by Sukeban Games from Venezuela in GameMaker and released in 2016. The project grew out of an entry for a 2014 cyberpunk game jam, and its look draws on PC-98 era games and anime.
We Are The Dwarves is a real-time tactics game in which the player commands a trio of dwarves travelling through space on a mission to rescue their home world. Battles unfold continuously rather than in turns as the player directs the three heroes. It was made and self-published by Whale Rock Games, a studio based in Kyiv, Ukraine, and came out in 2016 for Windows, Mac and Linux, with Steam tagging it under action, RPG and strategy.
Hajwala Drift is the mobile racing and drifting game that started the HAJWALA series. Players customise their car and character, tune the vehicle, build their own tracks and drift in a style inspired by Middle Eastern street-driving culture. It has been available since 2016. It is developed by Rababa Games, a Jordan-based studio whose Google Play listing gives an Amman address.
Liyla and the Shadows of War is a short narrative platformer based on events of the 2014 Gaza War. Released as freeware on Android, iOS and Windows, it was made alone over two years by Rasheed Abueideh, a Palestinian software engineer from Nablus.
Speed Maze - The Ultimate Run is a mobile runner in which the player races through maze-like tracks at speed, reacting quickly to turns and obstacles. Gimzat is an Egyptian developer founded in 2015 that focuses on games localised for Arabic-speaking players, with a team whose experience spans console and mobile work.
Furi is a fast action game from the French indie studio The Game Bakers that consists entirely of boss fights. Each guardian stands between you and your freedom, and battles mix close sword fighting with twin-stick shooting in a colorful, retro science-fiction setting. It rewards learning patterns and reacting precisely.
Owlboy is a story-driven platform adventure from the Norwegian independent developer D-Pad Studio. You fly through a world in the clouds and can pick up friends and carry them with you, using their help to fight and solve puzzles. Its development began in 2007, and the result is some of the most detailed pixel art in the genre.
Rabi-Ribi is a side-scrolling action game from the Taiwanese developer CreSpirit that mixes exploration with bullet-hell boss battles. You explore an island, collect power-ups and uncover secrets, fighting with a hammer while a fairy companion casts spells from range. It was crowdfunded, and despite reaching only half of its goal it still shipped and found a devoted audience.
Superhot is a first-person shooter from the Polish studio Superhot Team with one big idea: time only moves when you move. That turns every firefight into a slow, deliberate puzzle where you plan each step, grab weapons from enemies and dodge bullets in slow motion. Its minimalist red-and-white style is instantly recognizable.
The Town of Light is a psychological horror adventure from the Italian studio LKA. Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan is a 2D action RPG from Kiro'o Games, a studio headquartered in Yaounde, Cameroon. It pairs real-time combat with RPG progression inside an original fantasy world of its own making. Beyond the game itself, it is worth knowing as a commercial PC release from a Central African indie studio, a region still rarely seen on global storefronts.
Stardew Valley starts with an overgrown farm and leaves the rest to you: plant seasonal crops, raise animals, fish, mine caves and get to know the people of a small town. There is no single right way to spend a day, which is exactly its appeal. Created by one developer, it became one of the clearest proofs that a solo indie project can define a whole genre.
