Absolver is a martial arts action RPG from Sloclap, a Paris indie studio formed by former Ubisoft Paris staff, published by Devolver Digital. Players battle other players and AI opponents across the land of Adal, seeking a place among the Absolver peacekeepers. Moves are arranged in a combat deck where each card maps to an attack, and new cards, gear and weapons are earned as you progress. It was built in Unreal Engine 4 and released in 2017.
Avencast: Rise of the Mage is a Windows action RPG that borrows heavily from brawlers. Spells are cast by chaining quick movement inputs with mouse clicks, though shortcuts can also be assigned, and recurring boss battles punctuate the journey. Riddles add a touch of classic adventure design. Austrian developer ClockStone packed in more than 50 spells and around 150 unique items, and the Steam release dates from 2010.
Cat Quest II is an action role-playing game from The Gentlebros, a studio based in Singapore, released in 2019 as a follow-up to the original Cat Quest. Players guide two rulers, a feline monarch and a canine monarch, who team up to win back their thrones from oppressive rule. The fantasy world is full of magic, monsters to fight and loot to gather, and the adventure can be played alone or cooperatively with a friend controlling the second hero.
Cat Quest III is the third entry in The Gentlebros' Cat Quest series, an action role-playing game released in 2024 and published by Kepler Interactive. This time the hero is a feline privateer roaming a 2.5D open world overrun by rat pirates, sailing a ship between islands in search of treasure while a Pirate King gives chase. The Gentlebros are a development studio based in Singapore.
CrossCode is an action RPG from Radical Fish Games in Germany, published by Deck13. You play Lea, a mute amnesiac inside the fictional MMORPG CrossWorlds. Ranged and melee attacks are used both in combat and to crack puzzles, with elemental modes adding new powers for fights and exploration. Crowdfunded on Indiegogo and shaped by a three-year early access beta, it launched in September 2018 to generally favourable reviews.
Cube World is an action role-playing game with dungeon-crawling elements, developed and published by Picroma in Germany for Windows. Designer Wolfram von Funck started work in 2011, and his wife Sarah later joined him. An alpha arrived in 2013, but updates were so rare that many wrote the project off as vaporware, until the full game finally launched on September 30, 2019. Steam lists it under adventure and RPG, and it remains a Windows release.
Dungeons of Hinterberg is an action role-playing game set in Hinterberg, a fictional town in the Austrian Alps. It combines combat-focused dungeon crawling with social simulation, so time spent exploring dungeons sits alongside life in the village. The game was developed by the Austrian studio Microbird Games, published by Curve Games, and launched in July 2024 on Windows and Xbox Series X/S.
Enshrouded is a survival game with action role-playing systems, developed and self-published by Keen Games in Germany. It runs on the studio's Holistic engine and mixes combat and character progression with the needs of staying alive. The game entered early access on PC in January 2024. A full release on PC and PlayStation 5 is planned for October 2026, with Xbox Series versions to follow in 2027.
Ghost of a Tale is a stealth action RPG created mainly by Lionel Gallat of SeithCG in France, funded through a 2013 Indiegogo campaign. You play Tilo, a mouse minstrel held on an island prison run by rats, trying to escape and find his wife. Exploration means creeping past guards and using disguises to stay unnoticed in a dark medieval world of animal characters. The full PC version was released in March 2018.
Hand of Fate is an action RPG that combines deck building with roguelike dungeon runs. A mysterious Dealer lays out each randomized dungeon from cards on a tabletop, narrating events and asking for choices, and when a fight breaks out the game shifts into third-person brawling that rewards well-timed attacks, blocks and dodges. It was developed and published by the Australian studio Defiant Development, entering early access in 2014 and fully releasing in February 2015.
Kenshi is a blend of real-time strategy and action RPG play from UK developer Lo-Fi Games, released for Windows in December 2018 on the Ogre3d engine. Instead of a linear story, it drops players into a post-apocalyptic sandbox where they can pursue whatever role they like and customize every aspect of their characters. Development was mostly led by a single person across twelve years, and critics noted both its depth and its difficulty.
Released in 2012, Legend of Grimrock is an action role-playing game and the debut of Almost Human, a four-person indie team from Finland that funded development itself. It is a real-time, grid-based dungeon crawler in 3D, modelled on the 1987 classic Dungeon Master. It was created by TaleWorlds founders Armagan and Ipek Yavuz, and reviewers highlighted its combat mechanics and large modding community.
Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord mixes strategy with action role-playing, casting players as a custom character in a vast medieval sandbox where diplomacy, crafting, trade and conquest are all options. Armies raised on the campaign map fight in large real-time battles with skill-based combat. Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a first-person open-world action RPG set in a dark reinterpretation of the Arthurian myths. VoidExpanse is a science-fiction space game from AtomicTorch Studio, a developer based in Singapore, released in 2015 for Windows, Mac and Linux. Inquisitor – Martyr is an action RPG set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe that Games Workshop created for its wargaming franchise.
