ASTRONEER drops players onto alien worlds as a spacesuited explorer whose job is to settle planets, gather raw materials and put up structures. Progress comes from travelling between planets and switching on their cores, with extras such as a new suit or visor handed out along the way. American studio System Era Softworks developed and published it with Unreal Engine 4, launching in early access in late 2016 and reaching full release in February 2019.

Banished is a city-building game about keeping an isolated, growing settlement alive. Players must manage resources carefully to survive, with the balance between sustainability and efficiency at the heart of every decision. Shining Rock Software, a studio from the United States, developed and released it for Windows in February 2014. Reviewers liked its graphics and early difficulty but felt feedback on player actions was lacking, and that survival mattered less as towns grew.
Eco is a cooperative simulation in which players have to join forces to build a civilization on a virtual planet. Its design rewards a gentle, careful use of natural resources, and it serves as both entertainment and an educational tool. Steam lists it as an early access adventure and simulation title, and it is also described as a survival sandbox game. Strange Loop Games, a studio from the United States, created Eco, and arrived on Steam in February 2018.
Fields of Mistria is a farm life sim with role-playing elements, set in the fictional town of Mistria as it rebuilds after an earthquake. Alongside farming, players get to know the villagers, and the game also mixes in combat and magic. NPC Studio in the United States developed and published it, starting work in 2019 and drawing inspiration from Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon and Rune Factory. It entered early access in August 2024 and reached full release exactly two years later.
Slime Rancher is a life simulation about running a ranch full of slimes, blending farming routines with first-person action and exploration. Players catch and raise the colourful creatures while building up their farm. It was developed and published by Monomi Park, an independent studio in the United States, which put it into early access in January 2016 before a full launch in August 2017. A sequel, Slime Rancher 2, followed.
Slime Rancher 2 is a farm life sim that brings back rancher Beatrix LeBeau, the heroine of the 2017 original, and sends her to explore Rainbow Island, a brand-new location. It is listed across adventure, simulation and open world genres, carrying the ranching life of its predecessor to a new setting. American indie studio Monomi Park developed and published it, entering early access in September 2022 before its version 1.0 release in September 2025.
Terraria is a 2D sandbox adventure with no fixed goals, dropping players into a procedurally generated world to explore, fight monsters, gather materials and craft gear. Defeating bosses opens up stronger items, while townsfolk NPCs move in to trade and offer services, and it supports co-op play and mods. Re-Logic, an American studio, released it in 2011, and ongoing updates since then have reshaped it considerably.
WEBFISHING is a multiplayer fishing game built around chatting with other players. Everyone plays as an animal character wandering a shared 3D space, landing fish that can be sold or turned in for quests to earn cash, which then goes toward better fishing gear and cosmetic items for the avatar. It was made by lamedeveloper, a solo indie developer in the United States, first shared on itch.io in 2022 and then remade for Steam in October 2024.
Stardew Valley starts with an overgrown farm and leaves the rest to you: plant seasonal crops, raise animals, fish, mine caves and get to know the people of a small town. There is no single right way to spend a day, which is exactly its appeal. Created by one developer, it became one of the clearest proofs that a solo indie project can define a whole genre.
