Carrion flips the usual horror setup: instead of fleeing a creature, you are the tentacled monster, slithering through a research facility and hunting down the humans who stand in your path. Play centres on navigating the complex and ambushing the people inside, an approach its creators label reverse horror. It comes from Polish studio Phobia Game Studio, was published by Devolver Digital in 2020, and runs on the MonoGame framework.
Drawing on the real Dyatlov Pass incident of February 1959, Kholat has players retrace the route of nine students who vanished on the mountain Kholat Syakhl, a name meaning Dead Mountain in the Mansi language. It is a survival horror experience built in Unreal Engine 4 by Polish studio IMGN.PRO, which also published it. The Windows version launched in June 2015, with a Nintendo Switch release following in 2020.
Movie Games Lunarium, a Polish developer, made Lust for Darkness as an erotic horror adventure first released in 2018 for Windows and macOS. Its story draws on the imagery of Giger and Beksiński as well as the writing of Lovecraft. Console versions for Switch and PlayStation 4 followed via publisher SimFabric in 2019 and 2020, and a sequel, Lust from Beyond, arrived in 2021.
Following on from Lust for Darkness, Lust from Beyond is a 2021 erotic horror game from Polish developer Movie Games Lunarium, published by Movie Games. Like its predecessor, it tells a sexually charged horror story shaped by the art of Beksiński and Giger and the fiction of Lovecraft. On Steam it is listed as an action-adventure title for Windows, and it continues the same unsettling world.
A dark graphic adventure, The Cat Lady comes from Polish developer Harvester Games and was first released in 2012. It forms the second chapter of the Devil Came Through Here trilogy, following Downfall from 2009 and preceding Lorelai, which closed the series in 2019. The game was built with Adventure Game Studio and published by Screen 7, and it holds a Metacritic score of 81.
Set in the fictional Japanese town of Shiokawa during the year 198X, World of Horror asks players to explore eerie locations and battle otherworldly creatures to stop an approaching apocalypse. Its 1-bit pixel art was drawn in Microsoft Paint by Polish creator Paweł Koźmiński, whose influences included H. P. Lovecraft and Junji Ito. After an early access period starting in 2020, the full release arrived in October 2023 to generally favourable reviews.
Darkwood is a survival horror game from the Polish studio Acid Wizard Studio. By day you scavenge and explore a strange, ever-changing forest, and by night you barricade your hideout and try to survive until morning. It builds dread through sound, limited vision and uncertainty rather than cheap scares.
