112 Operator puts players in charge of emergency services, taking incoming calls and choosing which first responders to dispatch to each incident. It blends simulation with real-time strategy, and a series of downloadable content updates widened the range of emergencies, services and scenarios on offer. Polish studio Jutsu Games developed it and Games Operators published it in 2020; the game is built on Unity 2018 and received average reviews at launch.
Arrog is a puzzle adventure set in a strange world drawn by hand in black and white, with occasional touches of colour. Beautiful Desolation is an isometric point-and-click adventure set in a post-apocalyptic future version of South Africa. After alien technology hurls two brothers forward in time, they have to find a way to return home. It was made and self-published by The Brotherhood, a South African studio, and released in February 2020 for Windows, Mac and Linux, earning a Metacritic score of 76.
Besiege is a vehicle-construction sandbox from UK studio Spiderling Studios, themed around medieval siege engines. Players assemble their own machines, and reviewers have singled out the sheer range of experimentation it allows. It left a five-year early access phase in February 2020 on Windows, macOS and Linux, and The Splintered Sea, an expansion, was revealed in April 2024.
Bloody Rally Show pairs top-down arcade racing with the premise of a violent televised contest. Drivers drift around tracks, use boosts and fire at rivals, all while trying to keep an audience and its sponsors satisfied. Up to four players can compete together in local multiplayer. It was built and self-published by Kodo Linija, a studio from Lithuania, and released in 2020 on Windows, Mac and Linux.
Boomerang Fu is a fighting game in which players take control of cheerful food characters who battle each other with boomerangs. Beyond throwing and catching their boomerangs, fighters can grab various superpowers that change how each round plays out. BPM: Bullets Per Minute fuses a first-person shooter with the timing demands of a rhythm game, so shooting, reloading and moving all land best on the beat. It comes from Awe Interactive, a United Kingdom studio that both built and published it on Unreal Engine 4. The Windows version arrived in September 2020, with console editions following later.
Bright Memory is a first-person shooter made by one Chinese developer in his spare time under the FYQD Personal Studio name, built in Unreal Engine 4 and published by Playism. It blends gunplay with hack-and-slash elements. It entered Steam Early Access in January 2019 as Episode 1 and left it in March 2020. Instead of a second episode, it was rebuilt into the longer Bright Memory: Infinite, free for Windows owners.
Call of the Sea is an adventure game with a strong puzzle component, and Steam also tags it as casual. Creaks is a puzzle-platformer made and self-published by Czech studio Amanita Design. Progress combines platforming with puzzle solving, and its genre listings also class it as a graphic adventure and an art game with a casual pace. Announced in October 2018, it launched through Apple Arcade in July 2020 and arrived on Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch later that same month.
Released in 2020, Death and Taxes is a simulation game by Estonian indie developer Leene Künnap, released through their company Placeholder Gameworks. Players act as a Grim Reaper working through paperwork at a desk, deciding which humans will live and which will die. Empyrion - Galactic Survival is an open-world space sandbox from Eleon Game Studios, a developer based in Switzerland. It first appeared in early access in 2015 before its full Steam release in 2020. Players build and explore across space and planets, constructing large capital ships, planetary settlements and space stations while surviving and uncovering the mysteries of the Empyrion galaxy.
Factorio is a factory simulation game from Czech studio Wube Software, which both developed and published it. After crash-landing on an alien planet, an engineer gathers resources and builds increasingly automated industry with the goal of launching a rocket, and play can carry on once that goal is met. It supports single-player and multiplayer, began as a 2013 Indiegogo campaign, and reached full release in August 2020 after early access.
Giraffe and Annika blends action-adventure exploration with rhythm-driven battles. Annika, a catgirl with no memory, wakes up stranded on the island of Spica and teams up with a boy named Giraffe to find three star fragments that can restore her past. Encounters are nonviolent, resolved by hitting notes in time with the music. It was made by Japanese indie studio Atelier Mimina, published by Playism among others, and released on Windows in February 2020.
Hades is a roguelite action RPG in which Zagreus, son of the god of the dead, fights to break out of the Underworld with help from Olympian gifts. Every run offers randomised chambers and fast hack-and-slash fighting built on attacks, dashes and magic, while treasure earned between deaths unlocks lasting upgrades. Supergiant Games, an American studio, released it in 2020, and multiple award shows and publications gave it game of the year honours.
Haven is a role-playing game developed and self-published by The Game Bakers, a studio from France. It combines role-playing systems with adventure, as listed in its Steam tags. The game arrived in December 2020 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox, with PlayStation 4 and Switch versions following early in 2021. Critical reception was mixed, with reviewers split over its story.
Hydroneer is a mining sandbox from British indie studio Foulball Hangover, released on Steam in May 2020 and built with Unreal Engine 4. In Iratus: Lord of the Dead, tactical role-playing meets a roguelike structure, drawing on both RPG and strategy traditions. Available sources describe it only in broad genre terms, so the finer details of its campaign are best discovered in play. It was developed by the Russian studio Unfrozen and published by Daedalic Entertainment in 2020 for Windows, macOS and Linux.
Journey is a wordless adventure in which a cloaked figure crosses a vast desert toward a far-off mountain. Other players can appear along the way and help each other, yet they cannot talk or type, communicating only through a musical chime that also turns dull scraps of cloth vivid red and opens the path ahead. American studio Thatgamecompany created it, first for PlayStation 3 in 2012; Annapurna Interactive later brought it to Windows, with a reactive score by Austin Wintory.
