In 911 Operator you take on the job of an emergency call handler, answering incoming calls and deciding whether police, paramedics or firefighters should be sent to each incident. Steam classes it as casual simulation and strategy. Polish studio Jutsu Games built it after a successful Kickstarter campaign in the summer of 2016, and it launched on PC in February 2017, later followed by a sequel, 112 Operator, in 2020.
A Hat in Time is a 2017 3D platformer from Danish studio Gears for Breakfast, built in Unreal Engine 3 and funded through Kickstarter. Players control Hat Kid, an alien girl gathering Time Pieces to get home, running, jumping and dodging obstacles through open environments. Inspired by Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie and Psychonauts, it later gained DLC, online multiplayer and Steam Workshop mod support on PC.
Absolver is a martial arts action RPG from Sloclap, a Paris indie studio formed by former Ubisoft Paris staff, published by Devolver Digital. Players battle other players and AI opponents across the land of Adal, seeking a place among the Absolver peacekeepers. Moves are arranged in a combat deck where each card maps to an attack, and new cards, gear and weapons are earned as you progress. It was built in Unreal Engine 4 and released in 2017.
Agatha Knife is a darkly satirical point-and-click adventure whose protagonist founds a religion in order to persuade animals to accept being slaughtered. It belongs to the Psychotic Adventures universe shared with MechaNika, an earlier title by the same team. Spanish independent developer Mango Protocol first built it in Java and released it in 2017, later moving it to Unity for consoles; reviewers liked its look and dark tone but were split on its puzzles.
Aztez pairs side-scrolling brawler combat with a turn-based strategy layer, set in the Aztec empire in the years before the Spanish invasion. Players fight their way through areas across the empire, switching between hands-on action and turn-based planning. It was made by Team Colorblind, a studio from the United States, and released on August 1, 2017 for Windows, macOS and Linux, where Steam files it under action and strategy.
Crawl is a local multiplayer brawler set in randomly generated dungeons for up to four players or bots. One player is the hero while the others are spirits who possess traps and monsters, trying to kill the hero so they can take that role themselves. It was made by the Australian developer Powerhoof, first appearing in Steam Early Access in 2014 before its full release in April 2017.
Cuphead is a run-and-gun action game from Canadian studio Studio MDHR, released in 2017. One or two players guide Cuphead and his brother Mugman through a string of levels and boss battles after the pair strike a bargain with the Devil over gambling debts. New powers unlock along the way, though only a few can be equipped at once. Its hand-drawn look recalls 1930s rubber hose cartoons, backed by a big band score.
Darkestville Castle is a comedic point-and-click adventure in which the player takes the role of a sarcastic demon. Progress comes from solving puzzles and tricking the gullible characters around you as you try to restore mischief to the town. Argentine developer Epic Llama Games created it, and ESDigital Games released it in 2017 for Windows, Mac and Linux. Steam lists it simply as an indie adventure.
Dreamfall Chapters is an episodic 3D adventure focused on conversations with characters, exploring the world and solving puzzles. It continues The Longest Journey series, following Zoe Castillo across the cyberpunk Earth of Stark and the magical realm of Arcadia. It was made by Norwegian independent studio Red Thread Games, founded by series writer Ragnar Tornquist, and funded partly through a Kickstarter that raised more than 1.5 million dollars.
ECHO is a 2017 stealth game from Ultra Ultra, an independent studio in Denmark, built in Unreal Engine 4 and released for Windows that September. Drawing on stealth, action-adventure and science fiction genres, it centres on careful, sneaking play rather than open confrontation. The game was received positively by critics, but it did not succeed commercially, and it ended up being the only title Ultra Ultra shipped before the studio closed its doors.
Expeditions: Viking, from Logic Artists, is a tactical role-playing game built around squad combat, made, a studio based in Denmark and released on Windows in 2017 and published by THQ Nordic. Players take on the role of a Danish viking heading a voyage to Great Britain around the year 790 AD, directing a band of warriors through tactical encounters. It is the second entry in the Expeditions series after Expeditions: Conquistador, and the series later continued with Expeditions: Rome in 2022.
Faeria is a digital collectible card game fused with turn-based strategy, played out on a shifting game board inside a fantasy world. Matches combine deck choices with positional play, since the board itself changes as the battle goes on. It was developed by Abrakam in Belgium and arrived on desktop in 2017, with console versions following in 2020. Critics responded well to it, and it holds a favourable aggregate score.
Ace Maddox, a developer based in Slovakia, built Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China as an aerial combat game, and released it on Windows in May 2017. It draws on the history of the Flying Tigers, the volunteer pilots who fought for China against Japan during World War II. Players fly in first- or third-person view through a mission-based single-player campaign, and multiplayer supports up to 16 people in co-op and competitive modes.

Gang Beasts is a party beat 'em up from Boneloaf, a developer based in England. After an early access period on PC that began in August 2014, it arrived on Windows, macOS, Linux and PlayStation 4 in December 2017. Double Fine Presents handled publishing at first, until Boneloaf took over publishing in 2020. Its store listing pairs action and casual tags with simulation, framing it as a brawler aimed at playing with friends.
In the stealth horror game Hello Neighbor, players control Nicky Roth as he tries to sneak into the basement next door and uncover what his neighbor, Theodore Peterson, is hiding. The neighbor's AI adapts to earlier attempts, laying bear traps, bucket traps or cameras along routes the player has favoured. Russian studio Dynamic Pixels developed it with Unreal Engine 4, tinyBuild published it in 2017, and it grew into a wider franchise.
Herald: An Interactive Period Drama is a single-player adventure with visual novel elements and a branching story. Players decide how the protagonist Devan Rensburg acts and talks to others, which reshapes the plot, and the game tackles colonialism and other social themes. It was the debut of Wispfire, an indie studio in Utrecht, Netherlands, released in 2017. It won the Indie Prize Showcase award for Best Narrative at Casual Connect in 2015.
Hidden Folks is a hidden object game set in a series of animated scenes that react when you poke at them. Players scan each busy picture and interact with it to track down specific characters, creatures and items. Its creators, Adriaan de Jongh and Sylvain Tegroeg, are based in the Netherlands, and it launched in February 2017 on Windows, Mac and Linux as well as mobile. The appeal is patient searching rather than any time pressure or combat.
Late Shift is an interactive full-motion video game in which the story is told through live-action film and shaped by the viewer's choices. Tobias Weber wrote and directed it, while the Swiss company CtrlMovie developed the participation film technology behind it. Its festival screenings included Raindance and the New York Film Festival, and it reached Windows and Mac on Steam in 2017, where it holds a Metacritic score of 79.
Misao is a horror puzzle game set inside a cursed school, where the goal is to track down six scattered pieces of a girl's body. Players explore the haunted building, solve puzzles and survive its threats while gathering each missing part. Made in Japan by Sen with Miscreant's Room, it began as freeware in 2011, reached Steam as a definitive edition in 2017 and received an HD remaster in 2024. It was built with Wolf RPG Editor and shares a universe with Mad Father.
Niche is a simulation game about genetics in which players breed a pack of canine or feline creatures, steering which traits and genes pass to the next generation so the group becomes ideally suited to its environment. Steam lists it under both simulation and strategy. Swiss independent studio Stray Fawn Studio funded it through Kickstarter, ran an early access period from 2016 and released the full game in September 2017.
Old Man's Journey is a gentle adventure game with puzzle elements that follows an old man who sets off on a trip after a letter brings him news. As he travels, semi-still flashback scenes gradually reveal the life he lived before. It was developed and published by Broken Rules, a studio from Austria, and released in 2017 for Windows, macOS and mobile devices, later reaching consoles.
Outlast 2 is a first-person psychological survival horror game released in 2017 by Canadian studio Red Barrels, made in Unreal Engine 3 as the sequel to Outlast. Cameraman Blake Langermann and his journalist wife Lynn investigate a murder in northern Arizona, until a helicopter crash separates them. Blake must then search for Lynn through a village run by a deranged cult convinced that Judgement Day has arrived.

Project Nimbus: Complete Edition is a fast-paced mech action game from GameCrafterTeam and GameTomo, developed in Thailand. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, it puts players in control of Battle Frames, humanoid combat suits carrying a wide arsenal of weapons, in high-speed battles. This Complete Edition was released on Steam in 2017 for Windows and Mac.
Rain World is a survival platformer starring a slugcat, a nimble creature somewhere between cat and slug, searching for its lost family in the ruins of an ancient industrial civilization. Players scavenge food, hurl debris at predators and race to hibernation rooms before lethal rains fall, inside an ecosystem whose creatures act on their own. Independent American studio Videocult, a two-person team, developed it, and it launched on Windows in March 2017 through Akupara Games.
