Balatro is a poker-themed roguelike deckbuilder made by Canadian solo developer LocalThunk, with Playstack as publisher, in 2024. Each round asks the player to hit a score target by playing poker hands drawn from a standard 52-card deck, with only a few hands and discards available to spend. Drawing on the card game big two and Luck Be a Landlord, it earned Game of the Year honours from the 25th Game Developers Choice Awards.
Bloodroots is a hack-and-slash action game developed by Canadian studio Paper Cult. Drawing on the Western genre, it casts the player as Mr. Wolf, a man chasing revenge after a betrayal. It first launched in February 2020 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Windows, followed by an Xbox Series X/S version in July 2021. Steam lists it as an indie action title, and it holds a Metacritic score of 76.
Cuphead is a run-and-gun action game from Canadian studio Studio MDHR, released in 2017. One or two players guide Cuphead and his brother Mugman through a string of levels and boss battles after the pair strike a bargain with the Devil over gambling debts. New powers unlock along the way, though only a few can be equipped at once. Its hand-drawn look recalls 1930s rubber hose cartoons, backed by a big band score.
Darkest Dungeon is a roguelike RPG from Canadian studio Red Hook Studios, released on PC in 2016 after a year in early access. Players manage a roster of heroes and send them into the dungeons beneath an inherited gothic mansion, moving in real time and fighting in turn-based battles. Each hero builds up stress while exploring, and high stress can bring afflictions that hinder or occasionally strengthen them.
Don't Starve is a survival game from Canadian studio Klei Entertainment, first released on PC in 2013. The player must keep the scientist Wilson alive, fed and sane in a gloomy parallel world called the Constant while fending off strange and supernatural creatures. An Adventure mode pits him against Maxwell, and the game is known for its distinctive art style as well as its difficulty and permanent death.
Foxhole is a cooperative, massively multiplayer action-strategy game from Toronto-based Canadian studio Siege Camp, built in Unreal Engine 4. Viewed from a top-down perspective, it places each player in one of two factions as a single soldier in a persistent war inspired by early 20th century conflict. Players gather and manufacture supplies, haul them to the front, fight, and build fortifications to seize enemy territory.
Full Metal Furies is a Canadian action-adventure game from Cellar Door Games, which both developed and published it. It was first announced in February 2017 and released in January 2018 on Windows and Xbox One. Steam categorizes it under Action, Adventure and RPG, pointing to action combat mixed with role-playing elements, and it holds a Metacritic score of 85 from critics who reviewed it at launch.
Inscryption is a roguelike deck-building game from Canadian studio Daniel Mullins Games, directed by Daniel Mullins and published by Devolver Digital in 2021. Blake must then search for Lynn through a village run by a deranged cult convinced that Judgement Day has arrived.
Oxygen Not Included is a survival simulation game developed and self-published by Canadian studio Klei Entertainment. It blends the survival and simulation genres, and Steam files it as an indie simulation title. Pizza Tower is a 2D platformer by Canadian indie developer Tour De Pizza, released in 2023 and built with GameMaker. Chef Peppino Spaghetti climbs a tower to save his pizzeria, racing through 20 side-scrolling stages where collectibles and defeated enemies feed score combos. RimWorld is a science fiction construction and management simulation in which AI storytellers steer events, so each colony becomes a generated narrative rather than a pure test of skill. It was designed by Canadian developer Tynan Sylvester, with Ludeon Studios as publisher, and began as a Kickstarter-backed early access project in 2013 under the name Eclipse Colony. Sea of Stars is a role-playing game from Canadian studio Sabotage Studio, released in 2023 as the team's next project after The Messenger. Players control Solstice Warriors Valere or Zale, who wield sun and moon powers to hunt monsters called Dwellers across a fantasy archipelago. Its isometric pixel art recalls Super Nintendo era RPGs, combat mixes strategic and real-time elements, and it won Best Independent Game at The Game Awards 2023.
The sequel to 2018's The Forest, Sons of the Forest delivers survival horror set on a mysterious island. Players are sent there to find a missing CEO and his family, confronting cannibalistic creatures while uncovering an ancient secret hidden underground. Canadian studio Endnight Games developed it, with Newnight publishing, and it entered early access on Windows in February 2023 before its full release in February 2024.
Squad is a tactical first-person shooter centred on military realism, built by Canadian indie developer Offworld Industries in Unreal Engine 4. Players join large-scale battles between military and paramilitary factions on expansive maps, with the design aiming to capture realistic modern combat. It is seen as a spiritual follow-up to the Project Reality mod for Battlefield 2, and it left Steam Early Access for a full release in 2020.
Sundered is a Metroidvania action game developed and self-published by Thunder Lotus Games of Canada, first released in July 2017 for PC and PlayStation 4. The Long Dark is a survival game from Canadian studio Hinterland, fully released in 2017 after an early access period that began in 2014. Players take on the roles of bush pilot Will Mackenzie and doctor Astrid Greenwood, stranded in the freezing Canadian wilderness after a geomagnetic storm. Development was backed by seed money from the Canada Media Fund and by a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2013.
The Outlast Trials is a first-person psychological survival horror game from Canadian studio Red Barrels, serving as a prequel to both Outlast and Outlast 2. Players take the role of test subjects drafted against their will into a secretive Cold War experiment. Celeste is a precision platformer about climbing a mountain, built from short, demanding screens that restart instantly when you fail. Beneath the tight jumping and dashing sits a personal story about anxiety, depression and self-doubt, told with warmth rather than melodrama. It is a demanding game that stays encouraging, and one of the best-known indie platformers of its generation.
